Frequently Asked Questions
...and the way we think they are answered :)
What is outreach?
We see outreach as a way to show students a world they might not find otherwise. Or, maybe they think they have seen that world, for example "science", and it is "boring", "difficult", or "weird". We have the ability to reach out to these students in a way that shows them that "boring" might mean they haven't looked deep enough, "difficult" might turn into a "fun challenge", and well, science can be weird, so we don't have anything for that yet.
Why bother?
(we borrowed this answer from Wikipedia... hey, we are under construction here)
The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields are collectively considered core technological underpinnings of an advanced society, according to both the National Research Council and the National Science Foundation. In many forums (including political/governmental and academic) the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation's ability to sustain itself.
In 2006, the United States National Academies expressed their concern about the declining state of STEM education in the United States. One of the top three suggestions was to increase America’s talent pool by improving K-12 science and mathematics education.
What is the big to-do about STEMout?
As it stands now, many companies, organizations, schools, and the like have STEM outreach programs in place. The vast majority of these programs are shot-from-the-hip. While they are getting out a message and are to be applauded, we believe that by providing uniformity and a best-practices approach, we can gather all of these programs under one umbrella and engage students like never before. There's no need to reinvent the wheel.
