Strawberry DNA Extraction

Wed, September 6th

Students performed an experiment on strawberries in order to extract and separate their DNA. The students learned about DNA and formed a chemical reaction and precipitation reaction in order to extract the DNA from the strawberries. This experiment both taught the students and also allowed them to have hands on experience with the new science they had just learned about.

Students began by learning what DNA is and what makes it so important. In addition they learned about chemical reactions and precipitation reactions.

Facilitated by their knowledge on DNA, chemical reactions, and precipitation reactions the students were able to extract the strawberry's DNA. The students produced a chemical reaction which allowed them to release the DNA from the strawberry cells and a precipitation reaction which allowed them to see the cells.
