The Black Snake Experiment

Students explored dehydration reactions by lighting sucrose, ethanol, and sand on fire to produce snake-like carbon ash.

Through the black snake experiment, students explored the properties of the vital organic compound, carbon, an element essential for life on Earth. 

 

Students were introduced to physical chemistry as they performed combustion and exothermic reactions.
